DR. JIM STRAMLER RECEIVES NASA DISTINGUISHED PUBLIC SERVICE MEDAL
HOUSTON, TX - In recognition of his expertise in spacecraft habitability, Dr. Jim Stramler was recently honored at NASA headquarters with the Distinguished Public Service Medal. Dr. Stramler, Principal Senior Engineer in the Astronauts office at Johnson Space Center, works on the Space Programs Operations Contract at Barrios Technology.
Dr. Stramler has been a dedicated and consistent advocate for the crew office for over twenty years during the development and integration of the International Space Station (ISS) systems and equipment. His diligence, systems knowledge, planning skills, and integration abilities have precluded many costly systems problems. His experience and systems knowledge allow him to understand and anticipate problems during the systems design phase so that systems problems are resolved prior to fabrication. His ability to place himself in the role of the crew has allowed him to see and prevent systems development and integration problems. He steadfastly advocated the continuance of the Internal Volume Constraint, which maintains a translation path for the crew in the event of an emergency. He worked as a member of the Waste and Hygiene Compartment team where he identified several key interference issues, which could have reduced the on-orbit functionality. When Node 3 was relocated from Node 1 Nadir to the Node 1 Port Common Berthing Mechanism, Dr. Stramler was key in identifying proper rotation of the module so that the lights were oriented in the zenith direction. He worked to ensure that all key panels and components be relabeled according to the correct operational nomenclature. He also worked closely with the Regenerative Environmental Control and Life Support System team to understand the key operational and human factors issues requiring resolution prior to launch. Dr. Stramler has worked many significant issues with the Crew Quarters for the ISS, including key contributions to the design and construction of a replacement for the galley.
Dr. Stramler is recognized worldwide as an expert in spacecraft habitability, frequently making him the "go-to" individual for other issues within the Astronaut Office.
