HOUSTON, TX -
The Barrios Employee Awards and Recognition (BEAR) Team recently awarded six employees the Silver Quality Award for the second quarter of 2009. The BEAR Silver Quality Award is presented to 1% of Barrios employees each quarter whose contributions are so significant as to merit special recognition by their peers. Sandy Johnson, President of Barrios Technology, made the presentations to the following.
Kevin Beaulieu, Imaging Scientist / ESCG
Nominated by: David Bretz, KX/ESC
Kevin Beaulieu, the lead analyst and supervisor for the Image Science and Analysis tile inspection team during STS-125 Hubble Repair Mission, did an outstanding job preparing everyone for the video inspection of the Shuttle belly tiles during this unique and very challenging survey. He organized belly tile survey simulations and created simulated video data to help the Thermal Protection System team practice their procedures. He produced realistic looking simulated images for the photo/TV checklist which helped the crew obtain the correct pan/tilt position for the inspection camera during the flight. Kevin is very self motivated and is a valuable asset to the image analysis team. Kevin is the ultimate team player who is versatile and who is well respected within the group.

Jeff Brief, Software Engineering Services Application Developer / BC
Nominated by: Judith Peace, BC
Jeff Brief was nominated for his contributions to design developments for the Space and Life Sciences Directorate (SLSD) Web Theme Working Group. Jeff played a key role in the working group that is responsible for website layout transformation used to present Space Life Sciences’ new “Focus” to SLSD, JSC, and NASA. On behalf of his NASA Technical Monitor (TMR), Stacey Morrison, Jeff Brief was invited to join the working group as BC’s lead collaborator. Jeff worked extensively with Stuart Engelhardt of PPMI/Tietronix and Carla Guidry of NASA, to establish a new visual presence for SLSD. Over the course of four months, Jeff drew upon his design experience from the marketing world and submitted several professional compositions. In Mr. Engelhardt's words, these designs “infused new life and vibrancy into the evolution of the Space Life Sciences website layout”. Jeff is an asset to the working group and an integral part of the design that was implemented.

Meghan Erne, Engineer / SPOC
Nominated by: Carey Cobb, NASA MOD Life Support Systems Branch Chief
Meghan has provided outstanding support as an Environmental Control and Life Support (ECLSS) Flight Controller for the International Space Station (ISS), consistently exhibiting many admirable traits as an exceptional Barrios employee. Meghan has performed at a very high level, both in the planning of mission operations as well as the execution of same. Her support of the hardware testing and development of the flight rules and procedures for the Regenerative (Regen) ECLSS highlights her organizational and planning skills. Meghan's ability to improvise, or "think out of the box" was demonstrated in her idea that led to the planned use of lithium hydroxide canisters on board the ISS for carbon dioxide management. The reallocated usage plan resulted in the saving of three of these canisters in upmass. Her technical expertise, dedication, teamwork and leadership have contributed greatly to the ISS program, providing cost savings in hardware, as well as making it possible to go to six crew operations on-board the ISS.

Chrissy Stinson, Payload Communicator / MSFC Payload Operations
Nominated by: Kathy Nordmann, Project Lead
During a very intense period of payload and science activity on the ISS over a four day period, Chrissy demonstrated outstanding performance as a Payload Communicator (PAYCOM). Her superior performance resulted in an increase in the amount of science performed onboard the ISS. Chrissy professionally handled the intense Space to Ground communications pressure she was under and the constant changes to the timeline that were required due to some of the payload troubleshooting that crewmembers were performing on-board ISS as well as slip-plan timelines being used due to the launch delays of STS-127. Chrissy professionally and calmly handled the S/G traffic, coming from four different crewmembers who at times were calling down one after another about four different payload activities, with little or no delay. The Payload Operations Director (POD) stated, "Chrissy was by far the most beneficial cadre member for the POD this past week. Her performance level allowed me to authorize even more unscheduled science opportunities for the Space Program Integrated Contract Environment Payload Investigator. She was a huge part of science success this week."
