BARRIOS EMPLOYEES RECEIVE SILVER SNOOPY AWARD
HOUSTON -
NASA’s prestigious Silver Snoopy Award was recently presented to three Barrios Technology employees. The Astronaut’s Personal Achievement Award is presented to one percent or less of the workforce each year. The sterling silver pin, flown aboard the shuttle, depicts the Snoopy character created by Charles Shultz wearing a space helmet and space suit. The character was chosen by the astronaut office in 1968 as their mascot and adopted as their personal symbol of safety.
Mr. Christopher Carrier, Johnson Space Center (JSC) Chemist, was awarded the Silver Snoopy Award for excellent technical ability in developing and conducting chemical analyses for current and future life support hardware. He is very skilled and experienced in supporting a multitude of testing of various advanced water recovery systems for human space flight. Chris has greatly contributed to Exploration Life Support activities which will ensure new technologies perform as expected, ensure mission success, and sustain the crew and protect their safety. Chris’ contributions to advanced technology projects and flight hardware have greatly contributed to mission and systems success, both current and the future, and the sustainment and protection of the crew during space flight.

Mr. James E. Martinez, Materials Test Engineer, was awarded the Silver Snoopy Award for his exemplary performance on the International Space Station (ISS) Solar Alpha Rotary Joint (SARJ) Debris and Nitride Control Coupon (NCC) Analysis. James did an outstanding job providing analysis and characterization for the NASA customer, when he investigated the ISS SARJ race ring failure. Significant wear was detected on the outer diameter SARJ surface that contacts the trundle bearing. Consequently, twenty-three of the original witness nitride control coupons (NCCs) were sent to the Materials and Processes Laboratory at NASA/JSC for metallographic analysis by James. This task impacted multiple NASA divisions that were challenged to meet a very tight schedule. James made all the calibrated measurements for the metallographic analysis, worked multiple weekends, numerous late shifts, and several 12-hour days to meet flight critical deadlines. He sectioned, mounted, ground, polished and etched over 30 samples. In addition, he took over 600 optical micrographs and performance imagery analysis to determine percent area Discontinuous InterGranular Separations for each set of coupons. His analysis assisted the SARJ Recovery Team in determining the root cause of failure for flight hardware. James is a valuable asset to the Structures Engineering Division and is highly respected by his peers, the Engineering Directorate, the Jacobs management group, and the NASA customer.

Mr. Ethan Reid, Systems Engineer, currently supports JSC/EC in ISS Flight Crew Systems Management. Ethan was awarded the Silver Snoopy Award while serving as the Project Lead for the Temporary Sleep Station (TeSS) Hygiene Liner (flight hardware for STS-126/ULF-2). Ethan conceptualized this new hardware for the ISS that will allow Crew to perform hygiene activities in a private, enclosed space designated for hygiene. Under Ethan’s leadership and using his design concept, the TeSS Hygiene Liner was designed, fabricated, and certified in 6 weeks (an effort that usually takes several months) with full endorsement by the ISS Program and the Astronaut Corps. The use of the TeSS Hygiene Liner could reduce the change of growing mold on interior surfaces within habitable volume of ISS that are susceptible to mold growth. Installation is planned for some time during the STS-119/15A timeframe in preparation for the upcoming initiation of 6-Crew activities aboard ISS.
