SALAZAR HONORED BY JOHNSON SPACE CENTER DIRECTOR MICHAEL COATS
Houston, Tx -
Barrios employee Jorge Salazar was recently presented the NASA Johnson Space Center Director’s Innovation Award for his leadership and dedication in the development of a new communications operations concept for emergency scenarios onboard the International Space Station.
Salazar, who serves as a Communications and Tracking Officer for Johnson Space Center, is responsible for controlling communication systems onboard the International Space Station (ISS). His position enables the transfer of voice, data and video to and from the ISS and Mission Control Center in Houston.
During an emergency On Board Training debrief Salazar provided a concern about VHF noise heard on audio channels during emergency situations. He expressed that flight controllers could potentially miss critical calls while working to fill in communication coverage. Salazar developed a solution to the noise interference concerns and presented the idea to both US and the Russian Communication specialists. Upon their approval he quickly updated procedures and training guidelines to implement the new and innovative operations concept for the upcoming missions.
For his outstanding work and dedication to the success of the space program Salazar was presented his award at the Johnson Space Center Honor Awards Ceremony held in May. JSC Center Director Mike Coats personally presented Salazar with his award.
