BARRIOS TECHNOLOGY HOSTS HOUSTON A+ CHALLENGE TEACHER EXTERN

Houston, Tx -
Klein Forest High School teacher, La'Quesha Grigsby, recently spent a week learning all about the space program, Barrios Technology and Johnson Space Center (JSC). As a participant in the Houston A+ Challenge Teacher Externship program, Grigsby was exposed to many of the different contracts and support functions that Barrios Technology provides as a contractor to NASA and JSC.

“It has been a humbling experience to learn of all that it takes from the human resources stand point to reach the multitude of goals in space exploration,” said Grigsby.

The high school teacher spent time visiting with the corporate business side of Barrios Technology as well as the Mission Integration Contract, Shuttle Flight Design, Safety, Space Flight Training, and the Space Sciences.

“I have learned so much from each presentation and tour and anxiously look forward to employing this knowledge in my lesson plans and with students, parents, other teachers and the community.” Grigsby added.

Eight aerospace companies participated in this year’s program sponsoring a total of 18 teachers. The teachers received a NASA 101 course on Monday with a tour of Johnson Space Center, Mission Control Center and the Neutral Buoyancy Lab. On Tuesday the teachers listened to guest speaker Brett Williams of Ignite which is a nonprofit organization focused on incorporating a problem-solving education philosophy into schools through project-based curriculum and teacher training.

Grigsby and the other aerospace team teachers spent Wednesday and Thursday meeting and learning about the individual companies they were assigned to. Finishing each day over at Space Center Houston in the Education Resource Center where they had time to journal and work on lesson plans.

The Houston A+ Challenge Teacher Externship started in 2003 and has grown every year. The experience gives teachers insight into the business world, provides them with new ideas and tools for classroom lessons, and reenergizes them for the school year ahead.
