BARRIOS RECOGNIZES 2010 1ST QUARTER BEAR RECIPIENTS

The Barrios Employee Awards and Recognition (BEAR) Team recently awarded seven employees the Silver Quality Award for the first quarter of 2010. The BEAR Silver Quality Award is presented to 1% of Barrios employees each quarter whose contributions are so significant as to merit special recognition by their peers. Sandy Johnson, President of Barrios Technology, made the presentations to the following.

Todd Horelica/ADCO/Staff Engineer – SPOC
Nominated by Richard Nowak - SPOC


Todd Horelica is recognized for his outstanding leadership as Lead ADCO for the 20A mission. His leadership during the flight ensured that each shift was well briefed on plans and were ready to execute all activities. Through his careful planning and use of the new Orbiter Digital Audio Pilot (DAP) program, which allows direct handovers of attitude control from the Oribiter Vernier Reaction Control System (VRCS) to ISS Momentum Management (MM), he was able to complete the mission while using 83% less propellant at a significant cost savings to to ISS program.

Adele Luta/EVA Systems Instructor/Flight Controller - SPOC
Nominated by Art Thomason – SPOC

Adele Luta is recognized for her work as an EVA Systems Instructor and systems lead. Adele's diligence and attention to detail helped prevent the cancellation if two Extravehicluar Activities (EVA) during STS-128 and STS-129. The night before STS-129 EVA 2, an alarm prevented the crew from performing their nominal prebreathe protocol, Adele's pre-flight preparation provided the crew the necessary information to perform the backup protocol allowing the EVA to proceed. During STS-128, Adele's quick recongition of a Airlock oxygen valve misconfiguration allowed enough time for the configuration to be corrected preventing the EVA from being cancelled.

Brian McRae/Orion EVM Lead - OPIC
Nominated by Lucy Kranz - NASA and Deb Brady - OPIC

Brian McRae is recognized for his efforts as an integral member of the Constellation (CxP) Earned Value Management (EVM) working group which developed Integrated Baseline Review (IBR) guidlines for all CxP Projects. Brian serves as the OPIC lead for the preparation and planning for both the Orion Prime and Non-Prime IBRs. Due to his knowledge and professionalism, Brian has developed a good working relationship with the Lockheed Prime PP&C management. His tiredless efforts have resulted in value added products to the customer. Doug Sander, Constellation PP&C Technical Assistant and EV Working Group Lead said, "Orion has set the bar to conduct IBR's."

Joe Parani and Don Smith/Senior Engineer and Staff Technical Professional - SPOC
Nominated By Brian McDonald - NASA DI Deputy Division Cheif

Joe Parani and Don Smith are recongized for their dedication and commitment to ISS safety. After becoming concerned the Emergency Egress Guidance System (EEGS) would not provide sufficient lighting or functionality in certain emergency scenarios, Joe and Don took proactive steps to identify and communicate their concerns to NASA management. They also used their extensive experience to design a series of tests in the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility to provide a clear and conclusive evaluation of all key aspects of the issue. They presented their finding to the ISS Program Manager providing valuable data for a effective forward plan.

R. Troyce Walls/Launch Site Design Cetner Representative – OC-KSC/MIC

Troyce Walls is recognized for this outstanding technical interface with Johnson Space Center, Kennedy Space Center, Marshall Space Flight Center, Goddard Space Flight Center, and Italian agencies. His knowledge and professionalism have made him the "go-to" person for resolving complex technical issues. The value he brought to the Node 2 team expanded his responsibilties to other Italian modules; Node 3, the Multi Purpose Logistics Module, and the Permanent Logistics Module. Troyce coordinates with the design agency in Italy or Goddard, with the KSC project management, KSC processing teams and KSC management,enabling all parties to be a part of the solution.

Shan Shan Zeng/Sr. Systems Analyst - MIC/OPIC IT

Shan Shan Zeng is recognized for her outstanding work developing process efficiency tools that support both MIC and OPIC contracts. She balances the needs of multiple customer organizations, ensuring that each cutomer receives quality products in a timely manner. Most recently Shan Shan has been solely responsibile for the development and delivery of eight software releases for five seperate software applications, many developed in parallel.
