KENNETH RANSOM AWARDED SILVER SNOOPY
HOUSTON, TX -
Kenneth Ransom, a Barrios Technology employee, was recently awarded the prestigious Silver Snoopy Award from NASA. The Astronaut's Personal Achievement Award is presented to one percent or less of the workforce each year. The sterling silver pin, which depicts the Snoopy character created by Charles Shultz wearing a space helmet and space suit, was flown aboard the Space Shuttle, STS-58. Snoopy was chosen by the astronaut office in 1968 as their mascot and adopted as their personal symbol of safety.
Kenneth, Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Project Engineer, did an outstanding job during ISS Increment 12 by managing and scheduling amateur radio contact for Expedition 12 Commander William McArthur. As a result, Astronaut McArthur broke records for the most school contacts, world-wide regions contacted, and personal contacts. Astronaut McArthur, the first person to reach more than 100 world-wide entities from orbit, was qualified for the Distance Contact Century Club Award. This effort increased the awareness of the ISS Program throughout the world. Mr. Ransom was instrumental in coordinating school and other Ham radio contacts, training Astronaut McArthur in ISS HAM radio operations, and identifying opportunities to realize successful personal astronaut contact communications. Mr. Ransom also arranged for Astronaut McArthur to communicate with rare or unique locations, such as the Vatican, Palmer Research Station in Antarctica, and Peter Island, the furthest South ever worked by an ISS crew member using amateur radio. Kenneth's expertise significantly enhanced the awareness of the human space flight throughout the world.
The ARISS program inspires students to pursue careers in science, engineering, and mathematics by providing opportunities for them to communicate directly with the ISS on-orbit crew via amateur radio. Kenneth's commitment to the Program enabled people throughout the world to participate in the human exploration of space.
