Barrios Technology Recognizes Employees at Annual Luncheon
JOHNSON SPACE CENTER (Houston, TX) Barrios Technology recently held its Annual Awards Banquet with a special luncheon at the Johnson Space Center Gilruth Center. This event recognized employees who were recipients of awards from the 2015 Barrios Employee Awards and Recognition (BEAR) program as well as those receiving higher education degrees, company service awards, and the corporate Emy Award for community service.
Throughout the year, Barrios selects employees quarterly for their outstanding contributions to the company and their jobs. These employees are presented with the Silver BEAR award. At the end of the year, from those recipients, a Gold BEAR award winner is selected.
The 2015 Gold BEAR award winner was Mark Schaefbauer. An engineer in the Johnson Space Center soft goods laboratory, Schaefbauer was recognized with the Gold Bear award for his dedication and support in meeting a quick turn-around set of requirements to deliver critical thermal blanket hardware to the Lockheed Martin Cargo Mission Contract for the JAXA HTV-5 flight. He has extensive knowledge of the complex requirements for soft goods, both in thermal blanket performance / technology and in EVA operations, and he utilizes this in delivering a quality product, every time. The blanket will be installed on an upcoming Extravehicular Activity (EVA) will improve the performance of an invaluable tracker instrument to the ISS and science investigations. This effort Schaefbauer has showed that his expertise in the soft goods area is why he is the go-to person at JSC and NASA for soft goods fabrication.

The Emy Award recognizes an employee who contributed beyond the workplace in service to the community. The 2015 Emy Award recipient was Denise Skyles who was recognized for her continued years of service supporting the Barrios Employee Relations Committee (ERC) as well as a number of outside service activities. Skyles was instrumental in reviving the ERC in 2003 serving as chairperson for a time and instilling enthusiasm for new and fun activities for employees, including charity events. Through the ERC she has headed up several supply drives for the Ronald McDonald House in Galveston as well as helping to provide dinners at the facility. For more than 10 years Skyles was responsible for the annual Barrios Thanksgiving Pot Luck Luncheon. The scheduling, purchase of supplies, setup/clean up on the day of and for many years, she prepared the food herself. She always took personal leave for the entire day of the event. The leftovers were routinely taken to the Bay Area Turning Point that shelters battered women and their children.

Personally, Skyles has supported the Lighthouse Charity Team, a non-profit that provides equipment and volunteer labor to prepare meals to raise funds for charitable organizations and those in need. The team is available to individuals, businesses, emergency responders, utility companies, refineries and others in need. These groups incur only the costs of the food and products used for the event, allowing them to receive the benefit of 100% of the profits.
Education Achievement Awards as well as company service awards were also presented at the luncheon. Barrios Technology recognized 131 employees with service awards at the annual luncheon. Employees with 5, 10, 20, 25, 30 and 35 years of service were recognized for their dedication to Barrios and their commitment fulfilling the company’s mission to be “the foremost small aerospace engineering services company providing extraordinary value to our customers, employees, and communities.”
Sixty-three employees received 5-year pins. These employees support Barrios across a number of contracts supporting NASA’s International Space Station (ISS) program, Commercial Space, Barrios’ work in the Houston oil and gas sector, and their corporate offices.
There were 53 ten-year service award recipients, nine 15-year, one 20-year, one 25-year, one 30-year, and two 35-year service award honorees. Each employee was presented a custom designed Barrios service pin by President and CEO Sandy Johnson.
Two education awards were presented: Alisha Conover was recognized for completing her MBA from Kaplan University and Khaled Sliman was recognized for completing his BS in Information Technology from the University of Phoenix.
