Barrios Recognizes Employees with 2017 3rd Quarter Performance Awards

JOHNSON SPACE CENTER (Houston, TX): Barrios Technology recently presented employees with the 3rd Quarter Silver BEAR (Barrios Employee Award and Recognition) awards for 2017. Each recipient was commended for their high level of expertise and outstanding performance supporting Barrios’ contracts with NASA’s International Space Station (ISS) Program, and the Boeing Company. Employees recognized included Mary Lins, Amy Miano, and Richard Shremshock.

Mary Lins was presented a Silver BEAR Award for her leadership approach to problem solving and project coordination within the Research Integration & Mission Outreach (RI&MO) team. Lins’ supervisor experience has guided individuals within RI&MO to step up and take more ownership and responsibility of tasks and products while elevating the entire team’s performance. Her thorough grasp of the integration role has positioned Lins to function as a deputy to the RI&MO supervisor. Lins is relied upon to ensure all tasks and products are performed per the Annual Work Plan (AWP). She tracks each and every product in the AWP while providing much needed guidance to management when NASA directs or requests MAPI employees to perform work outside of the work plan tasks. Her overall contribution to integration is invaluable as she influences the MAPI team to share ideas across Communications, Objectives, and Results; track above-and-beyond NASA actions to closure; and identify and write MAPI award fee inputs.

Mary came into the RI&MO team, quickly got up to speed with the work plan tasks and products, and has effectively utilized her skills as a writer, editor, data manager, and team leader. Her writing, editing, and leadership skills have been paramount in leading the team to take more ownership of written products. Upon joining the team, Mary utilized her data management skills to integrate efficiencies in maintaining the newly redesigned Program Science Office Toolbox data system.

Lins’ dedication to MAPI and the RI&MO team epitomizes Barrios Technology’s core values of Respect, Integrity, Commitment, and Excellence.

Amy Miano was presented a Silver BEAR award for her dedication and commitment to the development of a new integrated SharePoint tracking tool that provides up-to-date and validated data on hundreds of ISS Investigations that is used by the Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), the ISS Program Science Office (PSO), and the general public on NASA.gov. After joining the RI&MO team Miano quickly ascertained the need for a reliable and comprehensive data tracking tool of investigations slated to be performed on Space Station.

Miano took the initiative to learn the associated processes, conceptualize an improvement plan, collaborate with stakeholders, and create the tracking tool in SharePoint. Her initiative to solve the wide-reaching data tracking problem illustrated excellent job knowledge. Knowing the tasks affected, she professionally investigated, planned and collaborated on the SharePoint solution. Miano’s success in creating this SharePoint solution was largely in part to her teamwork and leadership in enlisting every single member of the MAPI and NASA/PSO team and carefully and professionally weighing all the options and listening to all the suggestions, irritations, and “wishes”, to make judgement calls on each decision point. She enlisted the help of other MAPI SharePoint experts to learn, hone, and augment her own SharePoint skills.

Through trial and error and cooperation with the stakeholders, her dedication to solving the problem led her to discovering innovations and more efficient processes leading to an elegant and useable solution.

Rick Shremshock was presented a Silver BEAR award for his dedication and responsiveness to supporting urgent customer needs in the Space Station Program. Shremshock routinely demonstrated creative solutions to meet the customer’s dynamic needs. He responded quickly to an urgent request from ISS program Visiting Vehicle (VV) partners, who needed an updated Command and Control System (CCS) Environment Simulation (CES) to add a new interface to test with a Portable Computer System (PCS) laptop. While providing simulation updates for Boeing CST-100 and SpaceX, Rick anticipated future customer needs at Sierra Nevada and Orbital. All four Visiting Vehicle users now have the PCS laptop in the test configuration capability with the MADE.

Shremshock has produced a number of important simulation deliveries for the Space Station Program in 2017. The CES R15 simulation, CES R16 command database hybrid with CES R15 simulation, CCS R16 flight software, S1P1 R7 flight software changes for patch loader, and NES R5 flight software. For each of the CES deliveries noted above, he also provided customized versions to each of the four Visiting Vehicle partners at a rate of one delivery per week. While being highly productive in delivering high quality software products, Shremshock also supports a number of different areas: CES simulations, CCS flight software, ECZ flight software, NES flight software, patch developments, and IPCL reviews. His ability to support multiple areas is very valuable to the customer.

The Barrios Employee Awards and Recognition or BEAR Award recognizes quality performance and outstanding support of customer and company goals. Up to one percent of the current number of employees can receive the Silver Award each quarter. Silver award winners automatically qualify for the annual Gold award which is presented at an annual awards and recognition reception.
