Barrios Technology Recognized as Small Business Subcontractor of the Year

JOHNSON SPACE CENTER (Houston, TX): Barrios Technology was recently presented with the Small Business Administration’s (SBA) 2018 Region 6 Small Business Subcontractor of the Year award. This prestigious award recognized Barrios’ hard work, innovative ideas, and dedication to the community. Nominated by Jacobs Technology, Barrios was cited for work performed on the Johnson Space Center (JSC) Engineering, Technology and Science (JETS) prime contract providing engineering, design, sustaining engineering, analysis, technology development, manned and unmanned test services, laboratory and facility operation and maintenance, planetary research, physical science research and astromaterial curation.

The superior performance displayed by Barrios under Jacob’s JETS contract fell into several areas. One example is the superior supply chain and logistical skills demonstrated by the assigned property custodian, Jorge Charriez, enabling the NASA JSC’s Propulsion and Power Division (EP) to meeting all shipping, project, and program requirements and schedules without costly delays. In addition, the work done by the Image Analysis team, specifically Gary Kilgo, to detect ammonia utilizing Computer Aided Design (CAD) visualization led to the identification of the source of ammonia flakes on the ISS. The Advanced Resistive Exercise Device (ARED) team performs real-time support to ISS. Barrios has assisted by creating troubleshooting and repair procedures, maintaining involvement with the ARED test bed on the ground to maintain the facility and to run testing, and helping troubleshoot the Cycle Ergometer with Vibration Isolation and Stabilization (CEVIS).

Barrios was also recognized for supporting three Orion CEV Parachute Assembly System (CPAS) drop tests over the past year. Their roles as test director and test manager involve all facets of test preparation, test article readiness, test processes, scheduling and integration into a large C17 Air Force aircraft, and test zone readiness and retrieval of all test hardware at the Yuma Army Base in Yuma, Arizona. Barrios employee Dr. Dean Muirhead was recently selected as the test manager for parachute testing. Dr. Muirhead, an engineer with Barrios, was instrumental in creating a new solution called Alternate Urine Pretreatment (AUP), greatly increasing water recovery.

The nomination also cited Barrios’ work in writing proposals for grants from various organizations and universities to the benefit of the NASA JSC Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science Division (XI) and JSC. As part of the Preservation and Research Enhancement through Virtual Extraterrestrial Samples (PREVES) team, Barrios contributed to the proposal that won a $554k Planetary Data Archiving, Restoration and Tools (PDART) award, allowing them to continue development of the processes for full internal and external reconstruction and visualization of historical lunar and meteorite samples.

Further accolades were given to Barrios for their contribution to the building modifications and testing for the Pathfinder mockup and James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The JWST testing continued throughout the effects of Hurricane Harvey and remains on schedule.

The Small Business Subcontractor of the Year award honors small businesses that have provided the government and industry with outstanding goods and services as subcontractors. Barrios’ was selected as the 2018 Region 6 recipient from nominations submitted across 5 states including Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. The award was presented to Barrios by Valerie Coleman, SBA Program Manager, Prime Contracts Program.
