Barrios Recognizes Employees with 1st Quarter 2020 Performance Awards
JOHNSON SPACE CENTER (Houston, TX): Barrios Technology recently presented employees with Silver BEAR (Barrios Employee Award and Recognition) awards. Each recipient was commended for their high level of expertise and outstanding performance supporting Barrios’ contracts with NASA’s International Space Station (ISS) Program. Employees recognized included Erin Anthony, Rachel Barry, Garen Hartley, Erin Pillow, Nicole Rose, Chinmay Trivedi, and Tom Walker.
Research Integration and Mission Outreach (RI&MO) Communications Team members Rachel Barry, Nicole Rose, and Erin Anthony were recently recognized with a first quarter 2020 Silver BEAR award for their dedication and efforts in producing the “Microgravity” NASA Explorers documentary. The team clearly shared a vision to tell the story of the Typanogen science team of two young primary investigators who were sending their science to space for the very first time. The 2-year long project followed and filmed a space station science payload from inception, to delivery, to launch, through operations and return. They performed interviews with astronauts, scientists, and staff at Kennedy Space Center, NanoRacks and the ISS National Lab. The 7 episode series appeared on NASA YouTube and Facebook. Each episode is 5 to 7 minutes in length plus a bonus feature. To date the series has gathered over 1.3 million views.
Garen Hartley was also recognized with a first quarter 2020 Silver BEAR award. Hartley’s performance and innovative techniques are a vital part of the Johnson Space Center Engineering, Technology and Science (JETS) Cold Stowage (CS) Team. As the Minus Eighty-Degree Laboratory Freezer (MELFI) Hardware Lead Hartley is responsible for all powered ground support equipment for launches and landings. Utilizing his in-depth knowledge of electrical system, Hartley’s key responsibilities are maintaining, improving, fixing, and prepping all portable freezer/incubators, the batteries and breakout boxes for powering flight payloads, current monitors, and temperature monitors in support of the space station missions. Hartley was awarded a Jacobs innovation grant where he developed a Wireless Monitoring Device (WMD) that allows the science community to efficiently and safely track and record CS data during transit between labs, launch pads and landings locations. This allows the team to use any phone, tablet, or laptop, to pull up a webpage and see the current draw of the cold stowage payloads over a secure local wireless network. This device takes about 5 minutes to setup, compared to the old method which took up to 45 minutes.
Erin Pillow was recognized with a first quarter 2020 Silver BEAR award. Pillow has been vital in the development of configuration management (CM) processes for the Gateway Program since its beginning. She works with Vehicle Systems Integration leads and product developers to baseline and revise their products, as well as develop new processes to ensure the timely release of Gateway program products. This role is particularly vital now as the Gateway program nears critical milestones. The MAPI program has received positive feedback from NASA customers regarding the quality of Pillow’s support to product development, technical reviews, and the release of the new Gateway Configuration Management Workflow (CMW) tool. She has accomplished all this while the Gateway CM team experienced several personnel transitions that made an already challenging workload even more difficult.
Chinmay Trivedi was also recognized with a first quarter 2020 Silver BEAR award. Trivedi serves as the Space X Commercial Crew Visiting Vehicle Lead Integration Engineer. He was recognized for his relentless efforts in the visiting vehicle integration campaign for the Space X United States Crew Vehicle (USCV) missions. Trivedi lead critical efforts to close actions to support final Certification of Flight Readiness for the highly publicized Space X Demo2 mission. His trusted and professional relationships with key stakeholders proved vital in minimizing the processing time for critical approvals for the successful support of Program Milestone Reviews. Trivedi’s support of the Demo2 mission was vital to the continued sustainment of human presence on the space station, since this mission carried the first astronauts on a U.S. vehicle since the Space Shuttle.
Tom Walker was recognized with a first quarter 2020 Silver BEAR award. Walker serves as the Orion program Subject Matter Expert (SME) supporting critical program areas for Orion Landing and Recovery. Walker led a team of Orion program personnel through the planning, preparation, and successful execution of the Orion Underway Recovery Test 8 (URT-8). The test was conducted from March 12-17, 2020 off the coast of San Diego and was a major milestone in proving recovery timelines and procedures in support of Artemis I spacecraft. Walker leads cross program integration for concepts of operations, testing, execution, and coordination of Recovery Decision Criteria (RDC) for crew and spacecraft. His expertise and experience allow him to determine the appropriate time to move an RDC to final approval minimizing rework and processing time.
The Barrios Employee Awards and Recognition or BEAR Award recognizes quality performance and outstanding support of customer and company goals. Up to one percent of the current number of employees can receive the Silver Award each quarter. Silver award winners automatically qualify for the annual Gold award which is presented at an annual awards and recognition reception.
