Barrios Technology Employees Recognized for Excellence on Engineering Contract
BARRIOS TECHNOLOGY (Houston, TX): Barrios Technology employees supporting the JSC Engineering, Technology, and Science (JETS) contract were recently recognized for their contributions and performance in support of NASA programs as well as their dedication to supporting the local community. Four individuals received unique awards for their service.
Jorge Charriez, was presented the JETS Community Service Award. This award recognizes an individual who has significantly contributed in volunteer activities to enhance the quality of life in the local community outside of the contract. Charriez belongs to an outreach ministry which provides help to Houston’s large homeless population, military Veterans and families in need of assistance with food, clothing, and other daily necessities. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas season, Charriez coordinates with families in need and provides them with holiday meals. As a Veteran himself, Charriez routinely visits the VA hospitals, and coordinates an annual party to write thank you cards to military veterans to show appreciation and to honor them for their service and sacrifices to this country. He also goes out to Houston Veterans Memorial National Cemetery each Veterans Day and places flags on each grave site to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
James Martinez, was presented the JETS Best Science Technical Paper Award for his paper “International Space Station (ISS) Thruster Plume Contamination and Erosion Control for Visiting Spacecraft”. The same paper was previously awarded the 2020 M&M Professional Technical Staff Award. This paper describes the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) evaluation following hot-fire testing in a ground test vacuum chamber to gather information about particles in the thruster plume on copper witness coupons to look for particle impingement, erosion, (pitting), and contaminant constituents.
Jesse Hudson was presented the Support Staff Excellence Award. This individual award recognizes an employee who exhibited outstanding support to his or her respective department or office. Hudson joined Clear Lake Group (CLG) in early 2020 as a Facilities & Testing Department (FTD) Business Analyst. As a new employee, Hudson had limited exposure to the traditional office setting before being required to work from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This situation didn’t hinder his abilities to successfully assume multiple tasks. Hudson made the transition to a telework model easier for a department where the majority of the employees perform hands-on work. He set up and managed a SharePoint site where managers could track at-home work, post documents to review and publish possible work from home scenarios. He also helped get more than 100 technicians fully teleworking within weeks. He ended up reporting on over 1,000 documents for 232 employees. He also worked with the section managers to track locations of their employees daily which was very important to the NASA customer.
Dr. Prashant Rao was presented the JETS President’s Award. Each year Barrios, as a teammate to Jacobs on the JETS contract, selects an employee to receive the prestigious award based on their contributions and outstanding performance. Dr. Rao was recognized for this outstanding contribution to the Orion/Artemis program and specifically the testing and simulation analysis of the Orion capsule hatch system. In his work, Dr. Rao built, tuned, and ran 30+ launch pad and ocean recovery cases to demonstrate crew egress capability of the Orion capsule. Analysis results directly influenced crucial redesigns of the opening and hold-open mechanisms for the hatch. Working with NASA/LaRC Langley Research Center (LaRC), he established wind load models. Further, working with NASA/JSC design, Rao was able to produce a lock-out mechanism which was configured to structurally block the hatches from.
