Barrios Technology Employees Selected for Top NASA Awards

JOHNSON SPACE CENTER (Houston, TX): Barrios Technology had three employees recently selected to receive some of NASA’s highest honors given by the agency. Both Rachel Barry and Chelsey Chapman-Bussey were recognized with NASA’s Early Career Public Achievement Medal, and Cindy Romero received JSC Director's Innovation Award. These prestigious awards are approved by the NASA Administrator and presented at special ceremonies held across the agency at each NASA center. Each award recognizes outstanding contributions these employees have made to the Agency's mission.

Rachel Barry received the Early Career Public Achievement Medal for her contributions to communicate International Space Station (ISS) science during her first 4 years supporting the ISS Program Science Office (PSO) Communication Team. Her work directly increased the reach of PSO communication products and engagement of audiences with the science and technology research conducted on the Space Station. Barry has led improvements to the prelaunch science briefings that are shown on NASA Television. These “What’s On Board” briefings feature the Program Science Office and ISS National Lab speakers, and scientists whose experiments are launching. She was a driving force behind getting the first high-definition 8K videos downlinked to be all about ISS science. The resulting video has been viewed over one million times on the NASA YouTube channel.

Chelsey Chapman-Bussey received her Early Career Public Achievement Medal for her leadership supporting the Space Station Research Integration Office. Bussey began her NASA career in 2012 as a Research Scientist/Requirements Engineer. Demonstrating a level of initiative to resolve difficult issues others shy away from, Bussey’s energy, passion, and dedication to excellence quickly earned the respect of senior Space Station Program leadership. In 2015, she was given the opportunity to serve as the project manager for the Revolutionize ISS for Science and Exploration (RISE) initiative. In this role, Bussey’s strategic thinking was a significant contribution to the RISE team. This initiative was a mandate from NASA to transition the ISS Program culture and processes from an assembly mode to a science discovery/commercialization mode. Bussey has since served in a number of supervisory and management roles. In January 2020, Bussey was promoted to Mission Planning & Integration Manager.

Cindy Romero was recognized with JSC’s Director of Innovation Award for her leadership as a Research Integration Engineer for the Space Station program. Her execution of reviewing each experiment and organizing the important detailed information has led to a rapid and effective integrated decision-making process. Romero has embraced the challenges associated with promoting and enabling research and commercialization on the station through her comprehensive knowledge of multi-national science objectives, her expertise using the research planning data bases and tools, and her knowledge of the ISS research planning and communications processes. Romero exemplifies the spirit of innovation through her actions and leadership managing integrated “big picture” research objectives and advancing science research on station.

NASA holds their awards ceremonies periodically to recognize these outstanding contributions to furthering the space agency’s missions. Barry, Bussey-Chapman, and Romero were recognized at two separate events that were held virtually due to the current pandemic restrictions.
