Barbara Lewis Honored with SFA Silver Snoopy Award for Excellence in ISS Research Outreach

Barbara Lewis, Research Integration Specialist on our Human Space Flight Technical Integration Contract (HSFTIC) has received the Space Flight Awareness (SFA) Silver Snoopy Award for her exceptional leadership and innovation in communicating International Space Station (ISS) research to diverse audiences. Her work has modernized outreach strategies, expanded educational access, and inspired new generations to engage with NASA science.

Recognizing the shifting landscape of communications, Barbara adapted the ISS Research message to meet people where they are – online, in classrooms, and at community events. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she pioneered virtual outreach, organizing weekly informational emails with partners like the Space Foundation Teacher Liaisons, school districts, and museums. These efforts culminated in numerous virtual events that reached thousands across the US and globally, many of whom had never engaged with ISS research before.

Barbara’s audience-first approach has become a hallmark of her work. At a Rizzuto Elementary School event with a 60% Hispanic student body, she ensured the program included Spanish-speaking presenters, bilingual materials, and a Spanish-language exhibit. Her culturally responsive strategy not only engaged students but has since been replicated in other outreach efforts, earning wide praise.

Collaboration has also been central to her success. She worked with the Imagery and Graphics team to create an innovative ‘selfie station’ photo booth and a portable photo tower to connect with a younger, tech-savvy audience. This year, she expanded outreach even further by organizing an event that connected over 2,500 Texas art educators to the ISS message, effectively integrating the arts into STEM.

Since 2016, Barbara has led 255 outreach events, engaging more than 200,000 people face-to-face. Her creative thinking, deep expertise, and passion for science communication have made her a vital ambassador for the ISS and a deserving recipient of the SFA Silver Snoopy award. Congratulations Barbara!
